Pergolas, Arbors and Patio Covers

Arbors typically are smaller than pergolas and are used for gardener as a decorative landscaping application, they often have a trellis incorporated into it for hanging plants, where-as pergolas are larger and used more for throwing shade and for lounging under. We prefer to use 2x4 slats on top over the 2x2's as they last much longer.

Patio covers offer the most shade as it incorporates an enclosed roof vs open slats. There is much more protection from the rain and sun. If you think you may be spending a lot of time outside you may want to enclose the cover with screen to keep out bugs and mosquitoes.

Pergolas can be free standing or attached to a roof. The roof is an open design. It is meant for shade usually for an area near a rear door for sitting and relaxing.
